Either way, the men among you have got some news – you’ve had your limit cut and now, you can drink no more than seven pints of beer a week. Feel free to feel threatened by that and yell about how you drink 15 pints for your lunch, and it doesn’t even get you drunk, or whatever.
If you’re not a beer drinker, and are wondering what that equates to, the 14-unit recommended maximum is equivalent to nine small 125ml glasses of wine, or 14 single measures of spirits.
This is the same as the maximum limit for women, in a rejig of the drinking guidelines by the UK’s chief medical officers. They actually advise that there’s no safe level of drinking for anyone, ever, because drinking booze increases the risk of developing a host of cancers.
Dame Sally Davies, the chief medical officer for England, said: “Drinking any level of alcohol regularly carries a health risk for anyone, but if men and women limit their intake to no more than 14 units a week it keeps the risk of illness like cancer and liver disease low.”
Does this mean you should stop drinking? Not really. Everything fun seems to have some kind of risk attached to it, so do what you like. It is a Friday, so don’t feel lousy if you do your week’s worth of booze in during one sitting.
